Being vegan is not normalized in society today (although it has come a long way in the past few years). I once heard it said that this lack of normalization brings confusion. Like, being vegetarian makes sense because sometimes you’ll eat something that’s vegetarian and normal. So it’s not as difficult to imagine. I don’t think this means much, as a measure of or argument for anything. But if you’re someone who feels this way, worry not. Because I’ve put together a list of foods that you’ve probably eaten before that are already vegan.
Foods you’ve eaten already (that are vegan)
- Spaghetti w/ Marinara sauce (bonus points for baguette dipped in olive oil!)
- Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
- Ants on a log (you know, that classic snack–celery with peanut butter and raisins)
- Oreo Cookies, Lorna Doones, Nutter Butters and Fig Newtons (snack cookies are the bomb)
- Regular old potato chips (the ones with ridges are my favorites)
- French fries (steak fries, seasoned, curly fries, or crinkle cut–and don’t get me started on my embarrassing amount of love for tater tots)
- Soup (whether it’s lentil soup, vegetable stew, split pea or even a nice vegetarian chili, vegan soups are a viable option)
More vegan foods you may have eaten, if you’re a foodie
So some of us like to explore more than others when it comes to the food we put in our mouths. If you’re a fan of cultural cuisine, you may have had more experience with vegan food than you were aware of!
- Falafel with hummus
- Any food an Ethiopian Orthodox person eats while fasting such as Mesir Wat or Shiro Wat
- Vegan soups, part two: Borscht and Gazpacho
- Many Indian Curries, like Channa Masala, Rajma Masala or a simple Daal with rice
- Many Mochi are vegan, stuffed with things like taro, red bean and sesame seeds, and while they’re a delicious sweet treat, the texture also makes them tons of fun to eat!
So there are some “normal” foods that just so happen to be vegan. And hey, some new ones that maybe you haven’t tried yet. Since I’ve gone vegan, I’ve enjoyed learning about new foods and ways of cooking them, but if that isn’t your thing, just know that there are always going to be some of your old comforts to fall back on.
