We often find, as vegans, that people are surprised when they find out we are, or that we’re deciding to go vegan. This can be frustrating, and even astounding for us who have done reflection, and see it as not only a viable option, but the obvious choice when we consider the realities behind the products we’re taught to see as normal. Today, we’re going to talk about why. Or more specifically, we’re going to outline the plight of a vegan.

Don’t trick nonvegans
This is a simple post today, but I wanted to talk about it with everyone because it’s something I see popping up over and over again in vegan circles. And no one seems to say a dang thing about it! So today, we’re going to talk about vegan food and tricking nonvegans into eating it.

So veganism isn’t about purity. You’re not better than other people for being vegan. (We talked about that here.) But that doesn’t mean that you’ve got to give up and pretend that slaughtering animals for the pleasure of your tastebuds is okay. There’s another side to the story.

Hello, and welcome back to Eight Years In! If you’re new, this is the blog all about veganism and living a more ethical life. Now, if you ask me, part of living a more ethical life is that it should be sustainable. Which is why we’re here today to talk about budget tips for eating a vegan diet. You won’t be able to stay vegan if you think it means you have to spend more money than you’re able to on groceries. So let’s talk about cutting down our grocery bills into something more manageable!

Dear Reader,
This is the only time I’m going to tell you why you should go vegan. Because let’s be honest, there are already a lot of resources out there.
That being said, over the years I’ve gotten the question a lot. “Why should someone go vegan?” (Or sometimes, “why should I go vegan?” if someone is interested.) And to be fair, that’s a pretty normal instinct. When someone makes a decision to live any lifestyle, asking them why is the first thing we want to do. However, when it comes to veganism, people tend to not just ask us why, but why they should be doing the same thing–even if we haven’t outright told them that they should.
And so, for this reason, I’ve devised a plan. I want to write this out, all at once, even if it’s long. (And it probably will be.) For anyone who is on this site and interested in veganism, they can find this conversation and use it for their own edification. And in my own personal life, too, I plan on using this as a tool. The next time someone asks me why they should be vegan or why I am vegan, I will send them here. Because I’m a little bit tired of the elevator pitch, and curating it on the spot for each new friend I meet. I know that being vegan is a deviation from the societal norm currently, and I feel that both the people I meet and the subject of veganism deserve the respect of a full and honest answer.

When you first go vegan, it can seem miraculous. You can eat so much more than you used to, and yet you don’t seem to gain an ounce. And you don’t feel heavy or sleepy after meals–just content. But if you find yourself losing too much weight or trying to stuff yourself silly in order to maintain your body that you’ve always had, then it’s a concern. Don’t worry though, it’s a fixable issue!

If you’re a person who’s interested in going vegan, you may have this very important question: what do vegans eat? It’s important to have some sort of idea of what you’ll be able to eat before changing your diet in any way, to make sure that you won’t go hungry or be in awkward situations where you don’t know what to do.

Today we’re going to be talking about a nuanced topic, yet one I feel very strongly about all the same. And going into this, I know that not everyone will agree with me about my conclusion or the details that led me there either, but if you are vegan, know a vegan or are thinking of going vegan, I ask you to just listen.

Today we’re asking a simple question that you’d think would have a simple answer. And yet, there’s more nuance there than many of us would care to admit. So, what actually is veganism?
